Physiotherapy students rue govt attitude
7/30/2010 12:13:06 AM

Nitesh Sangral
Jammu, July 29 (TNI): Despite the tall claims of the state government to provide quality medical education to the medical students, closure of Government Physiotherapy College which started in 2006, is crying on its situation.
First batch of five years Physiotherapy course in Government Physiotherapy College housed in Government Medical College (GMC) was started in November 2006. Another batch was started in next year, but after that no batch was taken.
At present about 53 students are under going the course in the college.
Students on the condition of anonymity stated that they have learnt that GMC authorities had shown their helplessness in further enrolling another batch of the students in the college due to lack of requisite facilities.
At present both batches of the students decry their decision to join this course in government's college.
They have to take theory and practical classes in Private Physiotherapy College situated in Nardni Raipur in the out skirts of Jammu.
Students rue that what are the reason that private college is running physiotherapy course successfully and having all the required facilities and staff.
Students further said that many students cannot afford the private courses fees which are exorbitant.
Students said that there is no proper staff for teaching physiotherapy. Also there were no proper laboratory and library facilities.
It is pertinent to mention here that there were two colleges of physiotherapy in the state, and now that government has decided to close its institute. Only private college is there to teach physiotherapy to the students.
Admission to these courses is held thorough entrance examination conducted by Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) and this course has high demand as far as stream of medical sciences is concerned.
Sources stated that given the rampant privatization in every sphere of education, this is yet another example of government not owning its responsibility and given its nod for promotion of private colleges.
Acting Principal of GMC Dr Aniece Choudhary cited his ignorance in the case and said that he could say anything only after going through all records.
Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma could not be contacted even after repeated attempts.
